The Science of Being Seen

Investing in the next generation of clinicians who reflect the communities they serve.

Give Regularly: opens soon

Scholarships for men from underrepresented backgrounds entering psychology and the health professions, from the first steps of preparing for advanced study through the demanding years of a graduate, doctoral, or medical program itself.

In one line

A scholarship is the visible part. What it actually funds is a career someone almost couldn't afford to have.

What we fund

Three scholarships, one path

Undergraduate Scholarship

$250

For students in undergraduate or post-baccalaureate study who are preparing to enter a graduate, doctoral, or professional health program.

Graduate Scholarship

$500

For students currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral program in psychology, counseling, social work, or another behavioral health discipline.

Medical and Professional Scholarship

$500

For students currently enrolled in medical school or another doctoral-level health professional program (M.D., D.O., Ph.D., Psy.D., and comparable degrees).

Awards are outright gifts. Recipients take on no service obligation, no repayment obligation, and no continuing commitment to the Foundation.

What This Work Looks Like

The Scholars this Foundation funds will go on to do real, specific clinical work

Not a general idea of "mental health": specific, technical, high-stakes work with families who need it. This is the kind of care the field needs more clinicians equipped to provide, working alongside colleagues of every background.

Autism & Neurodevelopmental Assessment

Comprehensive evaluations that help a child and their family finally understand what's going on, and what support actually looks like next.

Functional Neurological Disorders

A complex, often misunderstood diagnosis at the intersection of neurology and psychology, requiring exactly the kind of careful, specialized training this Foundation funds.

Trauma-Exposed Youth

Culturally responsive care for children and families who need a clinician equipped to understand their full context, not just their symptoms, including survivors of abuse, community violence, and medical trauma.

Pediatric Epilepsy & Neurological Complexity

Working alongside neurology teams on cases where a seizure disorder and its psychological impact are inseparable, including evaluations that inform surgical candidacy.

Pediatric Oncology & Hematology Support

Psychological support for children facing cancer or blood disorders, and the families navigating a diagnosis alongside them.

Crisis & Emergency Psychiatric Care

Rapid assessment and de-escalation in the highest-stakes setting in the field, the emergency department, in the middle of a psychiatric crisis.

Illustrative stock photography. It does not depict any Foundation scholar or donor.

The Path, Connected

Support at every stage

Follow the path: preparing for advanced study, learning inside a program, and becoming the clinician in the room. Each stage has its own award, so support meets a student where they are.

Stage 01: Before advanced study

$250

Undergraduate Scholarship, for students preparing to enter a graduate, doctoral, or professional health program.

Stage 02: In the program

$500

Graduate Scholarship, for master's and doctoral students in psychology, counseling, social work, and behavioral health.

Stage 03: Becoming the clinician

$500

Medical and Professional Scholarship, for students in medical school and doctoral-level health professional programs.

This Foundation exists to open that path, one clinician at a time.

In the room

Someone who reflects the people they are meant to help

A surgical team in scrubs standing together in an operating room.

The team

Leading in the room

This is what the Foundation exists to make more common: clinicians who bring both training and understanding into the room.

Illustrative photograph.

Peer support

Group and peer support settings

Care often happens in a circle of people who understand one another, not only one on one.

Illustrative photograph.

Mentorship

Someone willing to say "I see you"

Mentorship is part of what keeps talented students in the field.

A Safe Space, Made Professional

The room itself matters

A client who is truly seen doesn't just need the right diagnosis, they need a room where they don't have to brace themselves first. That's the quieter half of what this Foundation funds: not just clinical skill, but the specific kind of presence that makes a person exhale before the session even starts.

Our Story

Why C.D. Breedlove?

Why This Name?

Two initials, two qualities. Tap a letter to see what each one stands for.

Carrying It Forward

In Davon Breedlove's words.

My father showed me early that asking for help isn't weakness. Now I want to help open that same door for the next generation.

Paying that forward means opening the field itself. More men from underrepresented backgrounds in clinical psychology means more people walking into a first appointment and finally being met by someone who already understands them, instead of needing everything translated first.

PendingMISSION SENTENCE: use the exact sentence from Mission and Eligibility FINAL once the wording ruling from Cierra Rowe and Hana Navarro is in. Do not paraphrase.

The Tagline, Explained

Tap a card.

We give scholarships in the sciences of psychology and psychiatry. But the deeper work is making sure both the clinician and the client walk into that room feeling seen.

Why This Matters

The Gap We're Closing

Talented students are too often lost from this field not for lack of ability, but for lack of resources, mentorship, and someone willing to say, clearly, "I see you, and I am investing in you."

Representation in mental health and healthcare still has a long way to go. That gap shows up in a hundred quiet ways: fewer people who look like the ones they're trying to help, fewer visible examples of what's possible, fewer hands extended to pull the next one through.

PendingSOURCE STATISTIC: one cited statistic on the health workforce, with its source named, that does not single out any group. To be found by Daniel Kim and checked by Zora Whitfield and Xavier Warren.

Owed back

Awards are outright gifts. Recipients take on no service obligation, no repayment obligation, and no continuing commitment to the Foundation. The only thing a scholarship asks of a student is to keep going.

The same path, two different outcomes

Without Support

Resourcestoo little to stay in
Mentorstoo few to follow

Capable students step away from graduate and professional study because the cost, the isolation and the uncertainty add up. The field loses people it needed, and the next student sees one fewer example of what is possible.

With Support

$250 to $500awarded at each stage
Seensomeone invested in you

A scholarship gives steadier footing while a student trains. It also says something plain: someone sees you, and is investing in you. That compounds forward, because a student who is supported becomes the clinician the next student sees.

    Team Portal

Welcome to the C.D. Breedlove Foundation team portal

You are about to enter the Foundation's private team portal. It is where our team keeps governance documents, working files, forms and the team directory. The portal is for Foundation team members only, and it opens in a new tab so this site stays right where you left it.

Team Portal: opens at launchOpens in a new tab. Sign in with your Foundation account.

    What to expect

    • You will be asked to sign in. Use your Foundation account, the one that ends in @cdbreedlovefoundation.org.
    • You will land on the Team Space, with links to Governance, Operations, Templates and Forms, the Brand Guide and Help.
    • The Org Chart tab shows who does what and who to go to.
    • Some folders are limited to the people named on them. If one will not open, that is expected, not a fault.

    Our ground rules

    • Treat everything inside as confidential. Please do not forward or share documents outside the team.
    • Scholar, applicant and donor information stays in the portal and is shared only with people who need it.
    • Use approved templates and the Brand Guide for anything that goes out in the Foundation's name.
    • If something looks wrong or you cannot get in, tell us rather than working around it.

See a "not found" page? You are probably signed in with a different account. Open the link in a private window and sign in with your Foundation account.
